"I've got nothing in my brain / at least that's what people say," Taylor Swift infamously sang in answer to the critics who dismissed her music. But lately Swift's layered lyrics have been getting more respect, and here poet Daugherty comes up with a unique assignment--113 poets are each given a single Swift song and asked to respond in verse. The results are meditative, varied, and visceral, paying tribute to Swift's love of words and her deeply felt passions. The highs and lows of romantic love are a recurring theme. "How much we love / the ones we love / when we love first," Tess Taylor writes. Others, like Marilyn Chin, delve into Swift's literary allusions. At the end of the collection, the poets reflect on their process, though most don't reveal what song they were given, leaving it to the readers, well primed by Swift, to guess at which song inspired their poems. "What strange magic to have Taylor Swift sing such holy truth to me, and to try to sing it back," Jeannine Ouellette observes, keying into the magic of this indelible, beautiful collection.
