Rome Collyer SLAM Skater of the Year MMXXV
NEW GEN OF THE YEAR 2025 Reef Condon • Reef Condon was at the St Paul's Cathedral rail in Melbourne's CBD, celebrating Rome Collyer's SOTY surprise, when the gears suddenly shifted, and he was handed the New Gen of The Year plaque for 2025. He had come to celebrate Rome's achievement but copped a significant award of his own. "Definitely excited and surprised," says Reef. "I went out and enjoyed a large night to celebrate."
Gabriel Summers Video Part of the Year 2025 • The opening clip of Gabriel Summers' No White Flag Zero part is the footage from the cover of Slam, Issue 138, and it's a fitting representation of his skateboarding. He drops in on a deathy 31-stair Hubba, coming out at Mach 10 before launching his body towards a harbour in Copenhagen. This is the Gabbers approach: huge obstacles and total commitment to the bit. As he flies through the air in slow motion, fully clothed and turning awkwardly mid-flight, he hits the water on his side, making a huge splash. It's a great intro that sets the tone for a video that is equal parts beautiful and brutal.
HALL of FAME Brett Margaritis • Way back in 1989, Brett Margaritis was featured in this magazine doing an invert at a ramp in Fremantle. This was just the third issue of Slam, then a very new magazine, and Brett's name was spelled wrong. He was a 13-year-old grom from Trigg, a beachside suburb in Perth, and described as someone who "skates with a precision and accuracy similar to that of a watchmaker".
