In Johnson's second series installment (A Soldier's Duty), Space Force Navy Lieutenant Ia, recipient of a field promotion for courage under fire, travels to Sanctuary, her homeworld, where religious tensions run high, to prepare them for the coming war. Ordered to command a Blockade Patrol ship intended to save lives of civilians, Ia finds that one man, who defeats her gift of foresight, may be her greatest challenge. Top-notch military sf with a strong female lead should appeal to genre fans.
