Effie Olsen thought sheâd never live on the tiny Maine island where she grew up, but sheâs returning from sixteen years as a professional chef in far-flung countries for one summer and one summer only. Her hometown boasts one of the best restaurants in the US, and lucky for her, Brown Butter needs a sous chef. Effie's eager for a chance at redemption after her last job went up in flames, but reluctant to set down roots in a place that reminds her of the ghosts of her past.
Until, that is, she runs into Ernie Callahan, her onetime best friend who now works in the very same restaurant. Early morning swims and late-night games of truth or dare with Ernie remind her of what sheâs been missing while traveling the world. He knows her better than anyone, and it doesnât hurt that his smile lights her up brighter than the lighthouses dotting the craggy coastline.
But their restaurant has a secret thatâs bursting at the seams, and if Effie doesnât keep it, her job will vanish into the foggy Maine air. As summer draws to a close, her dream job and the perfect guy are both within reach. Her salty seaside hometown might be the key to Effieâs sweet ending...if she can learn to let her heart lead the way in time.

Bilowâs sweet and summery sophomore outing (following Ruby Spencerâs Whiskey Year) delivers a tender second-chance romance. After high school, nothing was going to keep Effie Olsen in her small hometown of Alder Ilse, Maineânot even her childhood BFF, Ernie Callahan, professing his love for her on graduation night. For 16 years, Effieâs lived her dream, traveling the world as a professional chef, but when her latest job ends in disaster, she heads home to regroup. Unpleasant memories haunt her return, but at least sheâs able to land a job as a sous-chef at the townâs Michelin-rated restaurant, Brown Butter. Thereâs just one problem: Ernie works there too. The pair quickly agree to put the past behind them and attempt to restore their friendship, but when sparks fly, Effie realizes Ernieâs feelings arenât as unrequited as she once thought. Will flighty Effie be willing to stay put and explore their relationship? To make matters even more complicated, when trouble comes for Brown Butter, both Effie and Ernieâs jobs are at stake. Bilow slowly turns up the heat on the central romance as the protagonists try and fail to stifle their feelings. Readers will have no trouble seeing that these two belong together. -

Effie Olsen is not thrilled to be returning to her hometown of Adler Isle, ME, after 16 years away. Though she's spent years working as a chef in various countries and big U.S. cities, her latest job implodes, so she decides to return just for the summer. Luckily, the island's top-rated restaurant, Brown Butter, needs a sous chef. Even so, taking the job comes at the cost of facing the ghosts of her past, including her high school best friend, Ernie. Soon, however, Effie is surprised to realize that the restaurant and its secrets might be the key to her happy ending. Bilow's (Ruby Spencer's Whiskey Year) latest romance is the perfect summer listen. Nikki Massoud expressively narrates the defeated Effie as she returns home to recover from professional disappointments and find her footing. In addition to her skillful voicing of Effie, Massoud also shines in her depiction of Ernie, the love Effie left behind. Listeners will love this romance set in and around the restaurant, with evocative descriptions of food, atmosphere, and coastal beauty. VERDICT Romance lovers will appreciate this sweet and sexy listen, served up with a satisfying, happy ending.--Elyssa Everling
