      Bilow’s sweet and summery sophomore outing (following Ruby Spencer’s Whiskey Year) delivers a tender second-chance romance. After high school, nothing was going to keep Effie Olsen in her small hometown of Alder Ilse, Maine—not even her childhood BFF, Ernie Callahan, professing his love for her on graduation night. For 16 years, Effie’s lived her dream, traveling the world as a professional chef, but when her latest job ends in disaster, she heads home to regroup. Unpleasant memories haunt her return, but at least she’s able to land a job as a sous-chef at the town’s Michelin-rated restaurant, Brown Butter. There’s just one problem: Ernie works there too. The pair quickly agree to put the past behind them and attempt to restore their friendship, but when sparks fly, Effie realizes Ernie’s feelings aren’t as unrequited as she once thought. Will flighty Effie be willing to stay put and explore their relationship? To make matters even more complicated, when trouble comes for Brown Butter, both Effie and Ernie’s jobs are at stake. Bilow slowly turns up the heat on the central romance as the protagonists try and fail to stifle their feelings. Readers will have no trouble seeing that these two belong together.

After running out of money chasing her chef dreams, Effie comes back to her childhood home on Alder Isle for the summer. She gets a job at a prestigious local restaurant, but when she almost hooks up with her boss and discovers she works with her childhood friend Ernie, whom she rejected after prom, things get complex. Massoud provides an amusing delivery with excellent pacing of a messy romance. She gives Effie a big personality, expressing all of her doubts, fears, and joys with humor and care. Luckily, the island's top-rated restaurant, Brown Butter, needs a sous chef. Even so, taking the job comes at the cost of facing the ghosts of her past, including her high school best friend, Ernie. Soon, however, Effie is surprised to realize that the restaurant and its secrets might be the key to her happy ending. Bilow's (Ruby Spencer's Whiskey Year) latest romance is the perfect summer listen. Nikki Massoud expressively narrates the defeated Effie as she returns home to recover from professional disappointments and find her footing. In addition to her skillful voicing of Effie, Massoud also shines in her depiction of Ernie, the love Effie left behind. Listeners will love this romance set in and around the restaurant, with evocative descriptions of food, atmosphere, and coastal beauty. VERDICT Romance lovers will appreciate this sweet and sexy listen, served up with a satisfying, happy ending.--Elyssa Everling
